For busy peeps like me, it can be very challenging to make your health a priority. We get so caught up with our own schedules (and some with those of their families,) that our personal wellness often comes last. How can we make sure that our health is a priority each day?
Here are some tips based on the things that are helping me reach my goals.
Make the commitment.
For any goal to be successful, you must first make the commitment to work towards it. While fall is a busy time, it is also a great time to make a true commitment to your health and wellness. As the kids get back to school, give yourself health and fitness assignments like the way they might have a school assignment. Get up a little earlier in the morning…even a brisk 20-minute walk around the block can make such a difference for your health and energy each day.
Adopt the 80/20 Rule.
The 80/20 mindset is helpful when figuring out what kind of wiggle room you will allow yourself when it comes to your food and fitness. If you are eating well about 80% of the time, you can be flexible 20% of the time. If you exercise most of the week, don’t beat yourself up about missing a workout or two. It’s all about balance 🙂
Prioritize your day.
Each morning, take some time to set your priorities for the day…figure out what matters most and what can wait. This will help you focus on your top priorities (which should include YOU). Keep a written list (I put mine on the fridge) to serve as a reminder and to keep me on track. And, whatever I don’t get done that day, I simply add to the next day’s list!
Use the buddy system.
Having a friend who’s on the same page is a great (and proven) way to reach your goals. It helps keep both parties on track. We are much less likely to skip out on a friend than we are on ourselves. It’s nice to have someone else hold you accountable. It’s also a great way to combine social time with fitness time.
Keep a journal.
Did you know that keeping a journal is one of the best ways to stay on track with your health and fitness? Spend some time at the end of the day to focus on what went well and even those that didn’t…and be honest! No changing things or leaving things out on purpose to make yourself look good to yourself. If you skipped your workout, write it down, and then tell yourself you’ll do better the next day.
Sneak in “Fitness”.
There are lots of ways to sneak in some extra fitness time. Skip the elevator and take the stairs. If you have to go to the grocery store, park as far away from the door as possible. Walk your furry family members often (they’ll love it!) If you have kids, grab ’em and play tag. Instead of a brunch date, take a bike ride and pack a healthy picnic. Bring a frisbee to the park. The opportunities are endless!
