Vogue’s September cover star Serena Williams revealed her life in looks for the magazine’s recurring video series. Following her retirement announcement, she took a trip down memory lane, discussing her most memorable, controversial, and celebrated tennis outfits.
Some looks which stand out include the contentious full-length catsuit she was banned from wearing at the French Open in 2018. She wasn’t attempting to make a fashion statement; rather, she wore it for medical reasons as its compression capabilities help prevent blood clots. Had she worn a skirt over it, the committee might not have taken issue with it, but, oh well. The former World No. 1 also talked about the denim miniskirt she wore at the 2004 US Open when she debuted her Nike partnership. The skirt was actually an homage to fellow tennis legend Andre Agassi, who had previously competed in Nike “jorts” (jean shorts) back in 1988.
In the 17-minute video, the 40-year-old discusses Vogue covers and features she shot previously with famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. For one such photoshoot, Serena wore Carolina Herrera alongside sister Venus. In another, she donned Versace for her daughter Olympia’s first appearance in the publication.
Furthermore, we catch another glimpse of her caped Alexander McQueen wedding dress and a few fabulous looks for the Met Gala, designed by Versace, Gucci, and her good friend, the late Virgil Abloh, whom she speaks of fondly.
The 23-time Grand Slam Champion also offers little-known tidbits about the braids she wore as part of her royal-wedding look and her experience designing her own fashion line.
Below, you’ll see some of Serena’s most memorable tennis outfits. You’ll also read her quotes about how each was brought to life by her team of stylists.
