With all the technical tennis instruction and fast footwork drills these days, sometimes you just have to let your natural athleticism and instincts take over.
If you’re an everyday recreational player, that doesn’t mean you don’t have good instincts or strong athletic moves. Of course, you need a solid foundation and fundamentals if you are new to the game, but at the end of the day, you have to rely on your instincts and quick decision-making.
This clip demonstrates two tennis footwork drills for moves you may already do without even knowing it—the story’s moral: your tennis game doesn’t have to be scripted. Play to win, play to have fun, and let your instincts shine through!
Karaoke Slice Backhand:
As you step forward, back foot karaoke’s behind to create a shoulder turn and a better contact point.
Scissor Kick Overhead:
Use your back leg to launch up to create a boost to hit an overhead that is behind you. This is a great tool to retrieve a difficult lob.
A great way to practice is with a hitting partner feeding you balls. But you can also practice these moves without a partner – and even without a ball! You can either use a ball machine or do shadow swings (without a ball).
Remember – you don’t have to be a pro to train like a pro!
