Embarrassing moments happen – even to the greatest tennis players in history. Going down memory lane, an amusing yet embarrassing incident occurred with Roger Federer at the 2007 Wimbledon Championships.
Having beaten his arch-rival, Rafael Nadal, in an epic five-set final, Federer clinched his fifth straight Wimbledon trophy in 2007. Before the presentation ceremony, the fashionable tennis star changed into a stylish all-white suit, as he thought it would look iconic while holding the golden trophy in his hands. However, moments later, he found himself in an awkward situation.
What was so embarrassing?
Standing in front of the crowds with his trousers dressed backward, Federer referred to it as “A classic, funny, most embarrassing moment of my tennis career.”
I went to receive the trophy, and as I walk down, I’m a bit nervous, and as I put my hands in my pockets, I realize that the pockets are going backward, I was like, ‘It’s too late! I can’t change them anymore!
Despite Federer trying to cover it up, the eagle-eyed British photographers went wild when they saw his trousers zipper at the back. However, the then 25-year-old beamed and waved at the Wimbledon crowd to celebrate his 5th title at the All England Club.
Since then, Federer has won three more trophies at Wimbledon, making him the most successful man in Wimbledon’s history. Currently, Federer shares the record of most Grand Slam trophies won with Nadal standing at 20 major championship titles, while Novak Djokovic is one short at 19.
Tomorrow, Federer will take on Brit and Cameron Norrie, and like many tennis fans, we’ll be watching!
